Muawiyah then orders Abu Al-Awar to advance to Cyprus, where they find the Romans waiting on the other side of the sea. After a bloody war, Muawiyah negotiates with the Romans, pledging not to force anyone to abandon their religion, not to demolish their churches, and not to prevent them from performing their prayers and rituals. In exchange, the people of the island must pay 7,000 dinars annually and inform the Muslims of all Byzantine movements. Muawiyah then tells the Romans that they no longer need to pay tribute to them.
