The first episode of the historical drama series "Muawiyah" takes us back in time to Mecca, 13 years before the Hijra. We are introduced to the main character, Muawiyah, as a newborn baby, and his mother, Hind Umm Sufyan, expresses high hopes for his future as the leader of the Arabs. His father, Abu Sufyan, is overjoyed with the birth of his son and is told by Hind that Muawiyah is destined to be a great leader among the Arabs.
A Family Divided
As Muawiyah grows older, his family discusses their trade and the potential threats from the Romans. However, tensions arise when Abu Sufyan warns his family not to follow the news of Muhammad, who has gone to Taif and faced rejection. Muawiyah receives a letter from his sister Ramla, who has converted to monotheism and invites him to join her in her new faith. Abu Sufyan sends Amr ibn al-Aas to Abyssinia to try and bring Ramla back, but he returns unsuccessful.
The Battle of Badr
Six years later, Abu Sufyan receives news that Muhammad and men from the Quraysh have gone out to plunder his caravan. He sends Utbah and Umayyah ibn Khalaf to protect it, which leads to the Battle of Badr. The battle results in the death of many from the Quraysh, and Hind, Abu Sufyan's wife, demands revenge for the loss of her relatives.
A Father's Concerns
In the aftermath of the Battle of Uhud, Hind becomes enraged and Abu Sufyan informs her of the defeat turned victory and the surrounding of the mountain by Khalid bin Al-Walid. As the battle comes to a close, Abu Sufyan returns to find Muawiyah grieving over the loss of their family. Muawiyah shares the news of the capture and sale of Khubayb bin Adi to Abu Al-Harith and asks his father to see the abandonment of Muhammad's men in the face of death.
A Meeting with Heraclius
As time passes, Abu Sufyan shares his plans to visit Heraclius, the Roman ruler in the Levant, to discuss Muhammad's message and call to Islam. Upon arrival, Heraclius inquires about the followers of Muhammad, and Abu Sufyan reports that the weak and poor are the majority. Heraclius asks about Muhammad's commands, and Abu Sufyan responds with a description of the teachings of worshiping God alone, prayer, charity, chastity, and maintaining kinship ties.
A Son's Struggle
Throughout the episode, Muawiyah struggles with his own beliefs and the pressure from his family to reject Muhammad's teachings. He becomes increasingly agitated as the conversation between his father and Heraclius continues, and confronts his father about his true feelings towards Muhammad. Abu Sufyan admits that if Muawiyah had lied to Heraclius, their trade would be cut off forever. Muawiyah's mother is also against following Muhammad and threatens to die in falsehood rather than follow his religion.
The episode ends with Muawiyah performing ablution and hiding in mosques and houses, while Abu Sufyan's wife gives birth to a boy. It is clear that Muawiyah is torn between his family's expectations and his own curiosity about Muhammad's teachings.
